Basurto, Melissa

Welcome To First Grade!

IowaGreetings, I am Melissa Basurto and I would like to welcome you to First Grade! This new school year will mark my 16th year of teaching first grade and I am so excited to embark on this scholastic journey with you! I was born and raised in Iowa and upon earning my BA from Central College in Pella, Iowa, I relocated to El Paso, Texas; I have called the Sun City home for over 20 years.

I am certified in Early Childhood Education, including K-5 Elementary and Reading. Additionally, I have earned a Reading Endorsement and have received training in the Reading Recovery Program through the University of Texas at El Paso. My continuous desire to learn has allowed me the opportunity to follow my passion and teach children of all ages to excel and succeed in their educational pursuits.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that each child is unique and wonderfully made; each one with talents and gifts that contribute to a rich classroom environment. We all have the potential to learn and by exercising research based teaching methods such as Guided Reading Groups, Literacy Centers, Hands-on Math, Science and Technology lessons, and accommodations for children with special needs, my classroom becomes an epicenter for student success both academically and socially.  I invite you to join me, students and parents, in working together as a team to achieve our academic goals. It is my hope that I can provide daily inspiration to our youth, introducing them to a lifetime of learning.
